Specificaly Age is very important in Google. It makes far more of an issue of age than other search engines. The reason for this is that with age comes authority. For example a site that has been online for 5 years is more likely to be a logitemate site than one registered a month ago. The new site could just be used for spam, the old one has proven its here to stay.
The same thinking is applied to links. If someone had linked to you for 2 years it is seen that your site is obviously useful where as a link that is one month old from a high PR site could well have just been purchased so little or no bennefit is given to it.
As with any search engine, Google likes to see lots of fresh new unique content and pages that are updated regularly. If you have good content you will get links. Google knows this and uses it to rank sites.
