Don't target Generic Keywords
Far too many people assume that they know which keyword is best to target. Most people don't do keyword research and simply assume that the industry related top level generic keyword is the right keyword to target.
A case in point would be to take this web site which is about SEO. The keyword SEO is very generic and massively competetive. It would take an enormous amount of effort to get a decent ranking for. Not only that but it is not specific enough to convert visitors. It is not properly targeted. A much better word to target would be writing effective SEO Copy which is specific and less competetive than SEO.
The reality
Top level single word keyphrases are too broad and do not convert visitors.
The SEO Files Recomends
Chose 3-4 keyword keyphrases that are specific and highly relevant. Do proper keyword research to make sure that people actually search for the phrase you are targeting. A #1 ranking for a term no one searches for is less use than a #100 ranking for a hihgly searched term.
