Add Video to increase Search Engine Ranking
Video content has now become a major part of web contnet. More and more people are using the web to watch TV and other video. Bandwidth problems and limitations are now much less of an issue than they used to be especially with new fibre optic networks that are being deployed around the world. Modern computer systems are now much better at processing video than they used to be, but why should I care about this for SEO and my search engine rankings?
Enhance your site with Video
If a picture says 1000 words then surely even a short video is capable of saying 1,000,000 words. This makes it a hihgly valuable content resource. Not only can you use video to give a very useful demonstration of something you can also fit in an enormous amount of information.
An Additional Document Resource
With video you can use text, image and sound to produce an additional document resource. By adding a video this highlights that your site needed an additional type of media resource to give out all of the information that it holds. This shows that your site could potentially be a more valuable resource than a comparable site without video.
To host your own video or not?
There are many solutions to host your video content or provide a streaming resource for your video content but what about hosting it your self? Is there any bennefit? Well there is some speculation that says that hosting your own video content shows that you are a more reliable source of information.
The theory is if you were using a domain as a "pump and dump domain" you would not go to the trouble, time and expense of hosting your own video when you could use one of the many free solutions available. This gives you some instant authority which is ultimately what gets you higher search engine rankings. This is a yet unproven (to my knowledge) theory but the logic behind it stands up and it would not suprise me if this were correct.
Back in 2003 I noticed that sites with printable PDF files seemed to rank that bit higher than I expected and many PDF documents started ranking well in their own right. I ran a test to add lots of different types of document resource during the Nigritude Ultramarine search engine competition. This definately gave my site a boost in rankings although the advantages gained from this soon became filtered out. I believe the same methodology applies with Video today as it did back then with PDF files.
